The Poet is a bi-monthly poetry and art magazine that offers all poets and artists the opportunity to share their creative thoughts and experiences.

In order to make a difference in this world, we must have a passion for something and turn that passion into a vision. We, The Poet Magazine staff, share a common vision. Our vision is to take poetry and art into the community and to transform lives with it by writing and doing artwork. The Poet Magazine becomes a tremendous platform for aspiring and seasoned poets and artists to see their work in print.

James Brandenburg, Editor in Chief of The Poet Magazine, is only the second poetry therapist in the State of Texas to become certified, and this certification enables him to run poetry support groups at Clark High School. Art teacher Luis Valderas and Brandenburg are piloting programs at Clark, using poetry and art with students to channel their pain and frustrations into something productive.

In addition to working with students, Brandenburg will also offer workshops for therapists and teachers to help them better understand the healing effects of writing. He has contacted such organizations as the Rape Crisis Center and the Children’s Bereavement Center and will offer his insights to therapists, teachers and students in such institutional settings.

Brandenburg will also offer workshops on university campuses and consult with professors on the healing effects of art and writing. The Poet Magazine has published artwork and poems from a young man in prison, from poets suffering from bi-polar illnesses, from women who have been sexually abused by their own family members, and from poets who have experienced various kinds of trauma and tragedies in their lives. Valderas has also contracted with the city of San Antonio to work with students caught tagging (scribbling graffiti on buildings), in order to channel their energy into the visual arts.

MaryVirginia Pittman-Waller, wildlife photographer and scientific conservation researcher, photographs animals in Kenya, East Africa, and also spearheads The Wounded Warrior Project for us. Mary Virginia Pittman-Waller and Carol Hoorman, painter of the “Cowgirl Series,” are collaborating with The Poet Magazine on a special African edition, which will feature photographs of wild animals in Africa and poems by African poets. The Poet Magazine is currently collecting poems for a special edition dedicated to our men and women serving in the military. We welcome poems written by our poets for our soldiers as well.

Become a part of one of the most innovative poetry magazines in the country. Artists, poets, advertisers, educators, and business people, unite. Working together, we can change the world.

The Poet Magazine is distributed primarily in San Antonio, Austin, Abilene, Boerne and Fredericksburg. The Poet is also available in other areas in the United States, Canada and Europe. Subscriptions to the magazine are available as well.
